The Cuban Missile Crisis (CMC) was a thirteen day stand off between the USSR and the US and the closest it actually came to world war three. On October 15, 1962 a U-2 spy plane took photos showing missile bases that gave the capability for missiles to reach basically any US city.
This was the most tense time of the entire cold war. Starting with already terrible Cuban-American relations and a lot of passive aggression on both sides, Russia and America. The tension in the world was high enough for the pope to call for peace among the countries who weren't technically at war. In response to the discovery of these missiles was to quarantine Cuba (a blockade is an act of war. But lets be real, it was a blockade) and turn back pretty much any ships delivering supplies for Cuba's missiles. The reason for the installation of the Missiles in Cuba was the fact that the US had missles pointed at Moscow from 1958 on wards. These missiles were in Britain, Italy and Turkey. |
Russia's demandsRussia grew tired of being quietly threatened by the Us's missiles in Turkey and used the CMC as a way to get them to remove the missiles as well as promise to not invade Cuba if Russia didn't invade Turkey. Publicly Kennedy agreed to not invade Cuba, secretly they agreed to remove the missiles in Turkey. Publicly Russia removed Cuba's missiles. Ending up looking like they had lost the confrontation.

The USA's Three Cubas'While the US was being threatened for thirteen days, the USSR was threatened for four years. In 1958 they implemented missiles in Britain, Italy and, closest to Russia, Turkey. These missiles were used as nuclear deterrents against the USSR expanding any further.
